A USB cable that only supplies charging power may not transfer pairing data. A DualSense also needs re-pairing after connection to another console or supported device.
What this issue usually looks like
Start by writing down the exact error message, device model, software version and the moment the failure occurs. The same symptom may have several causes; make one controlled change at a time and record its result.
Before making changes
- Protect photos, saves, account access and locally stored files before any reset, reinstall or deletion.
- Use official update tools, safe power equipment and an authorized account.
- Stop if the device has physical damage, overheating, battery swelling or signs of electrical danger.
Diagnostic priorities
Use the Step-by-Step Troubleshooting section below to test the likely cause in a reversible order. If a step does not change the result, move to the next branch instead of repeating it or trying unrelated resets.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Follow the steps in order. Verify the result after each change, and stop when the issue is resolved.
Charge the controller
Connect it to a known-working port or supported charger and give it time to charge. Note whether the light bar responds.
Use a USB data cable
Connect directly to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable that carries data. Press the PS button when the console is on.
Rule out a bad cable or port
Try another known-good data cable and console USB port. Avoid testing only with a charge-only cable.
Reconnect from accessories settings
If another controller works, open Settings > Accessories and review Bluetooth Accessories, removing only stale duplicate controller entries if necessary.
Reset the controller if needed
Turn off the PS5, locate the recessed reset hole on the back of the DualSense, use a suitable pin to press the button according to PlayStation guidance, reconnect by USB and press PS.
Update system and controller software
Once connected, check system software and Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) for a controller device-software update.
How to verify the fix
Disconnect the USB cable and test wireless buttons and reconnect after a console restart. Recheck that charging works.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not use force on the reset hole or disassemble the controller. Charge-only USB cables cannot establish USB pairing data.
If the problem is still there
If a fully charged controller fails with multiple known-good data cables on the intended console, use PlayStation Repairs support.
